Prime Minister’s question time tackled the issues of changes to the motorcycle test leading to falling numbers of people taking and passing the test. Specialist motorcycle insurance broker, Devitt Insurance Services, welcomes the spotlight being put on the test changes and backs the concerns of Anne Main, Conservative MP for St Albans. She reports that in 2008 the number of people taking a motorcycle test fell by 62% and the number of people passing dropped by 58%. As part of its Keep Britain Biking Campaign, Devitt supports calls to look into the figures and encourage more motorcyclists to get on the road.

Gordon Brown confirmed that, “It is important that we have a strong motorcycling industry in this country,” and assured the House that the Transport Minister would investigate the figures.

“Devitt Insurance Services has been keeping Britain biking since 1936, but the burden of today’s challenging lifestyles, the cost of motoring and traffic congestion means getting on a motorcycle makes more sense than ever,” says William Hughes, Managing Director of Devitt Insurance Services. “Our Keep Britain Biking campaign aims to highlight the benefits of owning and riding a motorcycle, but the changes to the test seem to be keeping people off two wheels.

“Not only do bikers avoid the worst of the traffic, but they can cut down on motoring costs. However, our survey of over 1,000 bikers shows they feel that their motorcycle enhances their life, helping them meet new friends and enjoy a greater sense of freedom. We welcome news that the Transport Minister will be looking into the problem.”

Devitt is encouraging bikers to voice their opinion on the fall in people taking the motorcycle test on its forum at www.keepbritainbiking.com
